About the Franklin Falls Dam

Originally constructed in 1943 on the Pemigewasset River, the Franklin Falls Dam protects towns downstream on the Merrimack river from flood damage. By design, it has an enormous watershed and limited storage capacity so its operation is mainly to reduce the maximum peak flow of the river.

Directions: From I-93 to Exit 22, south on NH 127, 3 miles to the dam.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns and maintains the Franklin Falls Dam and recreation area, covering almost 3900 acres along the Pemi River corridor. It is almost completely undeveloped, offering many recreational activities and a pristine look into New Hampshire wildlife. You can drive across the top of the dam itself, which has some great panoramic views and a nice area for picnicking.

Franklin Falls Boating
Since the dam is on the Pemigewasset River, it is a great place for motor boats, canoes and kayaks to explore. There is a full boat launch at the Shaw Cove recreation area nearby. Access areas for smaller water craft can be found at Coolidge Woods or Periwinkle Field at Profile Falls just upriver. Then you can paddle your way down to the dam and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. Note that NH state law has requirements for life jackets and boating certificates for drivers of crafts with 25+ horsepower.

Franklin Falls Fishing
The Pemigewasset River is annually stocked with Atlantic salmon, trout and bass by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Since the river around the Franklin Falls Dam is mostly undeveloped, it is a terrific stretch of water for fishing. You will rarely have to contend with other people on the water and can claim all the potential fishing spots for yourself.

Franklin Falls Hiking and Biking
There are multiple trails within the Franklin Falls Dam recreational area, good for exploring and observing New Hampshire wildlife. Many of the trails are designed and maintained for bike riders, courtesy of the New England Mountain Bike Association. The most popular trail for hiking is the Piney Point Nature trail, which starts near the dam and does a loop around a connecting peninsula. For biking, the Mighty Chicken ravine trail is not to be missed.

Franklin Falls Hunting
There are several areas around the dam designated for hunting during season such as the Old Hill Village Trail near Profile Falls. The NH Fish and Game department stocks the wildlife and maintains habitats. Hunting licenses and permits are available from their website.

Franklin Falls Lodging
Only a mile from the Franklin Falls Dam entrance is Pemi Shore Cottages, waterfront cabins with great views of the Pemi River and the dam itself.
